Like the others, I hear you OP, and can totally empathize. It is a viscous business, now more than ever perhaps thanks to (insert any number of stupid things here). The good news is, if you’re like me, you didn’t get into Advertising because of your love of “the business.” You got into it because of your love for your craft, Art Direction or Copywriting I’ll assume. And your craft is bigger and more important (and definitely more inspiring) than any one company or account. Your craft and your love of doing it well (and getting better at it) is the one thing that never changes, as well as the only aspect of working that you have control over. As your post acknowledges, everything else is temporary. So take strength from the innate love you have for your craft, the magic and joy you’ve always felt about it. Try to remember just how cool it is that you even have the possibility to get creative satisfaction from your work. As you know, many others don’t. Most importantly, be loyal to your craft above all else. Always remember that it’s bigger than any agency or title or gig. And thank goodness for that. It’s like this: ask a musician if they love the music business. No way. Now ask them if they love music. Hell yeah. Tomorrow’s a new day. I say go with the love.
Nicely written @ECD1
So sorry. Get some rest. You will feel better! It is indeed a vicious business.
This is why I have a deep skepticism for agencies that position themselves as “family”. Don’t remember my dad firing my brother and I from the family when times got tough. It’s a business at the end of the day and all the big talk of loyalty goes out the window as soon as budgets tighten. Work hard, be good to people and support your team, but always keep your best interests at heart.
This!!! The “family” thing is such BS and so obviously meant to manipulate you into feeling loyal when it’s clear the company doesn’t give a crap about you.
I really really feel you. I know this doesn’t help, but that’s why I don’t care about this industry anymore. Gonna spend the next few years making some money and figure out how to get out and figure out what I really want to do with my life. This industry has made me a really anxious and really sad person. I know I need to get out for my health, I just have to figure out how!!
We need a union. You all know that.
:(
Some distance makes everything seem small. Give it time and will all be ancient history.
If you are at a holding company treat each day like it’s your last day there. That way when the axe comes for you it won’t come as a surprise.
Brilliant advice.
Don’t give your heart and soul to work. Ever. Give your talent and enthusiasm.
Thanks ACDs 1&2. We have to remind each other!
I feel you strongly right now
Sending you good vibes OP!
All of this, exactly how I felt when it happened to me
