It’s a big shift. It’s from concept to big design guideline creations. Our title is very malleable depending on what place is giving us the AD title
That is so true. I have considered going for more of a design director track so design guideline creation doesn’t scare me too much. But yes something to consider, thank you!
I work at a niche digital agency that works in a cool industry and after a year and a half at a traditional shop I greatly prefer it.
That jump might be even more soul crushing than the typical ad agency.

Ehh, decent hours. Less egos. I’ve been there. It’s not nearly as bad as you’re thinking.
Content agencies are a grinddd. Quantity is often the name of the game since the project fees are much lower. Constantly pitching, scoping, onboarding, etc.
I think you have two different buckets here — branding, which is more high-level design (R/GA, Wolff Olins, Interbrand, etc.) vs. social content creation (not as familiar with examples — maybe Vayner?). I think most ppl responding here saying it’s a grind are talking more about the second category. In my experience, branding actually moves slower than traditional, esp if you’re doing logo design or redesign. Branding can be a bit more dry, but it’s more predictable. You might prefer that! I know I do.
What type of art direction are you doing? I have experience in social media content creation, and I got to say, I agree with Saatchi & Saatchi. Especially when the client doesn’t want the budget to do more content shoots, but they still want to increase scope and posts per month. Then you have to scramble and start from the beginning again, if they don’t want to recycle content. I know every specialty comes with its own headaches, but I did not enjoy social media.
I’ve been in the traditional campaign space, but that’s the part that has been killing me too. Client has no budget so stock it is 🤷♀️ With that it also feels like no one wants to spend on broadcast or larger photo shoots to create original creative anymore. I guess I felt with social media you almost have to shoot original content (depending on the brand of course)
