Creatives (or anyone really) who have depression and/or anxiety, how do you keep creating when your mental health issues become really overwhelming? Do you guys have particular strategies?

So all this is good, solid advice for fighting your depression.but I think you want to know how to keep the darkness away long enough to create something amazing. It's so hard. There's a huge Voice of No up there already, and now its got a giant Tarp that it wants to throw over you.

Truth is you gotta let that fucker in. It's real. There's no use pretending it isn't. So bring it in, let it be part of the conversation and find your inner bully and tease its negativity and ugliness. You're depressed and alone. So what! Fucking use it. Make fun of it. Challenge it. Prove it wrong.

My advice, obviously, was the best. Stay fucking busy and get a dog. Also, in my experience, anti depressants help. They allow you to step away from it and focus on what matters. You're great. Youre gonna be great.

Read 10% Happier. It got me into meditation which helps you stay in the moment and not get caught up in anxious thoughts. Therapy can help too. Practice taking moments to breathe deep, focus on your breath (you can even do this mid meetings). Exercise daily, eat healthy, don't drink caffeine and not too much alcohol (these stimulate anxious neurons in your brain). Don't try and control everything, learn to let life happen and go with the flow. Stay away from Xanax-type drugs -- they help right away but not a good path to head down and you'll eventually become dependent and struggle to get off. That's a lot of advice, which I still work on, but it helps.

Also, if you trust your manager, talk about it with him/her. They might be able to help behind the scenes if and when certain situations arise and you need support or space. I had insomnia for the last 1.5 years (which lead to anxiety/depression and the utter inability to control my emotions) and I don't know what I would have done without my CD's support.

I'd be very careful going on SSRI's - my girlfriend is trying to come off them after many years, and it's a living hell. A few less invasive tips to improve your mental wellbeing: eat really healthy, work out, meditate and give yourself time to relax. If you feel like you can't cope without medication at work, maybe try finding a better work environment. In these days, there are so many options for agency peeps; agencies, production companies, in-house, consultancies, tech companies and the list goes on. On a side note: creative people are more prone to depression and anxiety, so it's a bit of a trade off for having the gift of being able to think of great ideas. Hope you feel better soon!

Does anxiety, depression, or ADHD medication affect your creativity? Or make you annoyingly chipper? I often consider addressing depression and all of that and then, like, don't.

Force yourself to a yoga class if you get home early enough. I've started taking magnesium at night, along with coffea cruda (google it, it's a homeopathic remedy). Those help with the insomnia. Free writing/doodling. My anxiety induced drawings have turned into some bad ass screen prints.

^ Therapy and meds, if your therapist recommends the latter. It may take some time to land on the best therapist for your needs but don't get discouraged. Don't recommend a breakdown, especially for the sake of your career; your mental health comes first.

Though, finding a manger you can trust is a rarity in itself. Worst case, try HR.

Creating has always been my only way out of mental health issues.

I cry and rock back and forth a lot?

Stay busy. Walk the dog.

Therapy. And learning when not to give a fuck.

Having trustworthy friends at work. A partner who gets it. A cd who gets it. Surround yourself with people who understand the struggle or are willing to empathize.

I think I need to give up on finding a natural deodorant that actually works.

After 6 years of temporary contracts and unstable situations, I find my dream job in my dream company. All of a sudden the world goes upside down and I get laid off. I start sending hundreds of applications, with only 2 recruiters getting back to me to say I don’t have experience for the job (this is how it works in Italy). I got out of my water drinking habit and finding it hard to build back up to 100oz + per day. I don’t like the fact I’ve added in drinks with fake sweeteners to get more fluid intake. What do you all drink to supplement water that is better than some artificially flavored and/or colored beverage? I feel nothing exists and I just need to get back to my water habit.
