It is my understanding travel costs related to litigation should be reimbursed to you and ultimately charged to the client

I thought so as well. I just won’t be volunteering to cover conferences for anyone 🤷
I guess it depends on the firm, larger firms I've worked at had a robust compensation/reimbursement procedure but smaller firms did expect you cover gas mileage or (in the case of an NYC firm I worked at) metro card costs when traveling within a certain mile radius. I've never heard of them asking you to wait until EOY though, that's a little strange. Either you're getting reimbursed and the cost is charged back to the client, or you're not and there's no waiting around "just in case".
Yeah that gave off a red flag to me. I guess I’ll see how it goes this year and take it from there but i expected more of a monthly or biweekly reimbursement schedule. Hopefully they actually reimburse a good amount.. it costs me nearly $40 each time I go to court.
Yikes. My firm pays me almost immediately and they bill it to be reimbursed by the client. My last first did the same thing. If the client doesn’t pay, I still get reimbursed.
It adds up! That is money that’s owed to you because it is travel for work unless it is a just a local courthouse that you don’t have to pay parking for to go to. By holding out until the end of the year, you are losing even more money because you have less money in your accounts earning interest. My firms have always reimbursed mileage and parking and any other expenses within a month but usually within 10 days.
Thanks everyone for the insight. I will play it their way for the rest of the year and address it if they don’t reimburse me fully.
