I’m generally looking for people who can make the team better, so I value two things over anything else: the confidence to know that they belong in the role and self-awareness to own their mistakes and know when it isn’t necessary to open their mouths.
My two favorite questions to help with the second part:
1. If I were to ask previous managers or colleagues, what would they say is the worst thing about working with you?
2. Tell me about a time you screwed up or something went badly for you - something you would rather a future employer not know about.
To the second question, I’m looking to see that they can just say “I screwed up”. A lot of people do the “I screwed up, but I fixed it and learned something from it” which is ok. The worst is “I was given this impossible task…” or “I took this job in an environment that turned out to be toxic and…” - effectively anything that shifts the blame onto someone or something else.
If there were a way to reliably gauge collaborative style, adaptability, humility, and emotional intelligence during an interview, I’d be thrilled.

I always wish I could tell if their interview style is their actual style. Lots of people are great at putting on facades, but then show up differently
