Role inflation
Not typical, though I know someone who went from intern to ECD in two years.
Rising Star
Not typical. Acd to ECD maybe 8-10 years. If ever tbh.
The size of the pond matters. The size of the talent matters. The size of your ambition and compounding of success matters. Start your own agency and you can be an ECD tomorrow. 🤣
Not typical but not unheard of either. I went from fresh junior to GCD in ten years. Senior to GCD was roughly similar to the person you mentioned plus or minus a year (gets fuzzy).
But of course there’s more to it than just that number. For example, advertising is my second career and I didn’t get that junior job until I was 30. Most folks didn’t know that because I looked a bit young for my age (then, not so much now, haha). So I already knew how to have a job. How to present in meetings. How to manage up and how to deal with politics. My previous career was also as a writer so I had more experience in that as well. But of course, how would any of the juniors I started with know that?
My point though isn’t to defend people moving up fast. It’s more to say that everyone does it different and that’s totally ok. Someone who took longer to get there isn’t less than someone who did it in less time. I mean, considering all my GCD peers were roughly the same age as me, did I really get there any faster?
