I think something that indireclty ended up affecting my professional life was taking some time to focus on my personal development. A few years ago I started making a really intentional effort to improve my health through exercise, learning about food health, getting on a regular sleep schedule, and attending therapy. Once those parts of my life started falling into place and I began to see the benefits, it was like my entire relationship with work changed. More energy, more focus, better mood, all these things affect your perfomance.
Buy things that make your job easier. Convenience is like buying time.
1. Paying for takeout so you have more free time to relax
2. Memberships to associations
3. Premium software
4. Hiring someone (to do work for you)
etc
Take a long break - 2-3 month vacation. Goes along with the health tune up mentioned above
What I've always found helpful is a sharp focus on time management. I mean, we can always get more of this or that, but we can't make more time. I try to dedicate an hour early each morning to absorbing any news or reports I think I need to know. And I'm very careful not to be wasting time throughout the day. I was never really a dawdler, at least compared to a normal person, but I find that sometimes I have to kick myself to keep things moving quickly. You can produce more time, but you can always manage the time you've got better.
