Great question. I’d say that I’m an incredible listener with the memory of an elephant, but I’ve found it difficult to balance demonstrating that quality in an interview while also showcasing how personable and high energy I am (building rapports is critical to being a successful PM). It’s also a bit of a tight rope to convey those soft skills while also elaborating on my professional skillsets. It certainly doesn’t help that I have ADHD which can make it challenging not to “ramble”, especially if I’m nervous and/or speaking to a HM that I don’t have any prior interaction with. I realize I’m doing it, but the urge to emphasize my experience alongside relevant examples in a limited timeframe is something I’ve had to work on over the years.
I am really teachable and become autonomous rather quickly. I usually need to know I have the opportunity to learn and openly ask questions without it being held against me. Sometimes I find it shocks people. I don’t know if it’s because they underestimated me in the first place. I find when I know the support is available I tend not to need it
I can relate to this. I’m a fast learner and even though I can typically hit the ground running, the knowledge that support is available is comforting (even if I don’t need it). In college I would actually study by creating “cheat sheets” despite knowing I wouldn’t need it lol
What I’ve noticed over the years is the teams that welcome questions, or are even impressed by curiosity, are the healthiest environments. On the flip side, my worst experiences in the workforce have been in departments led by people who view this as a negative - usually those leaders get defensive or would neg me because they weren’t good at their jobs and having someone ask questions they couldn’t answer only highlighted their insecurities.
My ability to implement structure and order in chaos.
Memory. 😢ok, why am I here. Let me read the post again!
Two things: curiosity is one of my super powers, as is being incredibly detail oriented. Patterns and things others frequently miss stick out like sore thumbs to me. A third thing and maybe fourth thing is that I have a very high bias towards action and am very scrappy—frequently finding ways to solve problems others deem intractable.
