What’s something not to do or say during salary negotiations?

Curious to see what others have done that was a no no

I think one of the biggest mistakes people make is that they see the range of salary and automatically ask for the top of the range. Unless you have 5 to 10 years of experience and data and statistics to back up, why you deserve top of the range that should never bediscussed during salary negotiations. Personally, I’m usually asking for mid to just above mid range of the salary that way I have room to grow with yearly salary increases.

That’s interesting. I always hear others say ask for the top range, but you do have a point too

Is negotiating offers the norm now? I’ve been at my company awhile and at the time I was hired they said they don’t do negotiations, take it or leave it and they’d offer the next person. I do believe we renegotiate now, however I’m not sure if it’s the rule, the exception, or somewhere in the middle?

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

If you’re currently making 53K/yr and have about 1yr 1/2 of experience in X position and the company you are interested in says on Glassdoor that the average salary for your position is 80K, would it be valid to ask for that if you get the opportunity to get an interview?
