My colleague is going on maternity leave for 4 months and I was asked to cover some of her projects which are step up in responsibility than what I’m currently operating at. Some peers have suggested I ask for a raise to accommodate this but I’m not sure I agree as I’m only covering her while she’s out? What are others thoughts about this?

Well unless you're the reason for her pregnancy then I'd say you deserve that raise. You're taking up her work and even if it's just few months it's still extra work...so you gotta ask for a raise.

like

Ask for either a raise or a one-time bonus paid out during the time your colleague is gone. Your employee won’t like having to pay you both at the same time, but they’d likely rather have you around than having to hire someone new.

I think a one-time bonus would make more sense, depending on how long she'll be out. If she'll be gone for a year or more, I would ask for a raise. If she's just leaving for the last 2-3 months of her pregnancy and a few weeks after birth, I would ask for a one-time bonus. You're not the reason she's gone, but it's also not a permanent responsibility change.

How do I approach them in a way that makes me stand out?

I’m interested in a Success Operations Analyst or Sales Strategist role at a Y-Combinator FinTech startup. I’m a perfect match for the roles & I have the opportunity to speak directly to the founder but I’m not sure how to approach them in a way that makes me stand out but not too arrogant.

Any tips??
