What’s the best way to explain a 2-year gap on a resume, even before you get an interview? I was traveling and just taking a break from the industry, but I don't want that to make me sound 'unreliable' to a high-volume restaurant manager.

I wouldn’t take that as a bad thing at all. I look for longevity in each position, not gaps.

Takimg a gap for travelling is good too because you've learned all about different cultures and people. Hopefully developed some people skills which you can put to use to build rapport with customers.

It was a sabbatical. You were exploring. Make it sound like you learnt something during the travel, what you did and why you went to those locations. Any skills that you learnt or improved during that time away. A gap doesn't have to be a negative, if they ask... you need to show how that helps with your current CV and skills in my opinion.

I went abroad to work the summer in Croatia and Greece, despite being in hospitality in UK I was more confident there. I got a bunch of fresh air. Saw new places, learnt about different cultures, history and people. There were things I enjoyed in both locations and things I didn't like (but I have negatives even for back home in Italy). Did you make any extra connections, friends? What did you experience there that you don't find here in the UK? And how does that make you better now as an employee? Travelling will always improve interpersonal skills at a minimum.
