Relax and get off social.
HR has entered the chat.
Be relatable. Show an interest in them. Gets them talking. Tell them about the role. Stay away from stupid interview questions (what’s your worst trait, best trait, best life lesson, etc) . Those generally do the opposite.
Source: me. Been on my fair share of awkward interviews where I didn’t have a canned answer ready, and others where I high fixed the interviewer on the way out. You can probably guess which ones offered the job that I accepted.
Lol it was just a metaphor but the idea is that you make the candidate comfortable.
Chief
I like to give easy wins and see if they actually respond coherently with anything that sounds impressive, e.g., tell me about a time you’ve added value to your team, tell me about a time you successfully managed conflict on your team etc. Anyone who’s been involved with student groups etc even if they don’t have previous work experience should be able to come up with something, and them selling themselves well makes it easier for me to sell them well.
Also, I cater pretty closely to the firms questions to me like if the firm is asking me “did the candidate seem like they go above and beyond” then I will ask the candidate specifically “tell me about a time you went above and beyond” so I don’t have to leave that question as a “I don’t know, we didn’t talk about it...” which can happen if you are TOO organic/chatty about the interview.
(Interviewees: please help us help you. We’re not trying to trip you up with these questions, at least I’m not.)
