What exactly do they struggle with? Understanding rounding for 10ths vs 100ths decimals. Or the actual checking of the neighbor number to be higher that 5to determine rounding. Or that the neighbor turns to 0 after it helps you round?
I never taught 3rd grade ...😄 so just wondering whats going on.
I teach 3rd grade math and science and I think it helps to explain the purpose of rounding which is to make it easier to add multi digit numbers. I further explain how I frequently use rounding to mentally estimate my weekly and monthly expenses.
Thank you for the input. We did discuss why we use rounding and how it's used to estimate, time, money, numbers etc. They struggle with place value mostly. When Rounding 256 to nearest hundred, I have seen answers 200 or 260.
I don't know. Rounding is one of the hardest things to teach. When I used to do 7th grade, you just kinda give up on teaching it. It seems simple, but most the students were actually third grade level.
Use fingers and toes …pretend write place value on toes and hold hand up for 5.
A mountain number line. (An upside down V). The left side counts up (the peak is the number with the 5 in the ones place) and continue counting up going down the other side. You walk the mountain and put a ball down. Where would it roll? Down to the ten/hundred/thousand etc at the bottom. Oh and the wind always blows East at the top of the mountain.
