When I saw how beautiful and obvious math is when you REALLY understand it — and how much damage you do when you just give kids stuff to memorize instead of focusing on the connections between everything.
Math was one of my favorite subjects in school. When my family and I immigrated to US, 1982, it became a language I was able to understand and handle well. With the encouragement of family and friends, I decided to take Teacher of Mathematics path.
I was always good at “dumbing math down” to my friends in school so it was always an option. But I went a very long route getting a bachelors in engineering and a masters in elementary education which screams teach calculus 😉
I started in a completely different direction in college but on more than one occasion in grade school and middle school a few of my teachers gave me the opportunity to teach the class. Once I was in high school my middle school math teacher gave me a couple chances to volunteer and teach a couple lessons. Some of the best and worst teachers I ever had were my math teachers. There’s way more to the story but they were definitely a big push in this direction.
My aunt suggested I become a teacher or a nurse since we had none in the family. I brushed it off. 😂🤣 Later, to make a long story short, my College Algebra teacher encouraged me to take more math classes and consider becoming a math major. Before I knew it, I had switched my major from Business Administration to Secondary Mathematics Education. Little ole quiet me! Plenty of times along the way I wondered what I had gotten myself into. Perhaps even regretted the decision. 19 years later, here I am having taught for 15 years! Go figure!!!
I already had a BS in math. When I decided to get certified, it was the quickest route.
