What’s the biggest pay cut by percentage you’d take for an in-house job with good WLB if you knew you could still make ends meet and save a little after? 50%? 75%?

I don’t know that I would take any full time job anywhere where I could only make ends meet and only save a little?

Time to find an excuse to hire another team member AGC1 !

Percentage cut is irrelevant. I’ve calculated what is needed for our budget. I’d accept that for TC. It ends up being about a 60% drop.

0. Try to find a reasonable WLB with biglaw salary. They are out there.

Example: Obviously there are times that are miserable with 300 hr months, but most months I do not work much on weekends or even on weeknights after putting kids to bed.

It’s all a continuum so it’s hard to say - ie just how good is the WLB and how much can you save? If you’re barely working and you’re still paying your bills, doing what you want to do, and saving a bit, I understand taking a big pay cut. Conversely is the WLB is just OK/a bit better, different story.

I was just a senior associate when I went in house years back. I didn’t take a pay cut. Salaries went crazy after Covid so I have little fomo. But years later I went back into firm life and doubled my salary as counsel.

Second round of interviews with a comm lit boutique where I would be the only associate with 5 partners. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? What do you do when you feel the goalpost has been/is being moved re: billable requirements? Like there's a spoken vs unspoken? I chose this job based on billables vs salary and what I'm being told I'm expected to do now is 20-30% (at least) > than what was initially agreed upon. Given my other life responsibilities, this is creating a huge strain & I feel like this is slowly getting harder & harder on my spouse & kids. I'm grateful to have lots of good work but not sure how to course correct.
