What’s the one topic at work you don’t talk about? Yes politics and religion, anything else?

Well, I just learned today not to talk about your favorite sports team, unless you want a 45 minute lecture on why you're wrong even though it's your personal favorite. Never doing that again.

funny

Coworkers. I avoid workplace gossip like the plague. There's no reason to ever talk negatively about anyone you're working with, even if they deserve it. It can only come back to bite you.

smart

I have a good number of years sober from alcohol, and I take it seriously for myself, but don’t make it my personality. With that being said, the number of times a week where I have to endure the talking of/bragging about/joking about getting drunk is absolutely obnoxious. My managers know I’m sober but still try to talk to me about their drinking habits. I hate being that guy, but I have to tell them to stop multiple times a week. The normalcy and acceptance of drinking culture in corporate America is insane. Meanwhile, if I brought up smoking a joint I’m sure I’d be written up.

I avoid everything even tangentially related to politics. Even a lot of social issues are related to politics these days, and I try and avoid it all. I just don't want to deal with any tension at work, even around social issues or cultural differences.

Something I avoid talking about would be anyone's health. I've worked with people whose ailments were kind of their personality, and having to listen to a lot of that is just depressing. I guess that sounds heartless, but seriously, if people made some effort to take care of themselves it would make more sense than all the complaining.

I tried to avoid learning about it in my coworkers, crazy beliefs if I can. I had a coworker who was a flat earth and believed aliens made the pyramids. So every time I talk to them, I would get a headache. So if I can avoid that nonsense. I do.

I recently was let go (in lieu of accepting my two weeks) and I should have received my March expense check by the end of April per the employment agreement (submitted the report April 1, let go before mid April). I have emailed HR but haven't heard anything. I've got a feeling someone at the top is putting a hold on it.

How do I get my money from them? It's a few hundred dollars

I asked for a raise in April 2022 after three years with my company. Positive feedback since day one. Learned I was making less than peers at other asset managers in NYC with less experience (14 years). Latest conversation was with HR about how they calculate salaries. I’ve been asked to provide examples how my role has changed since I started to justify the increase. Is this normal? Or is this just their way of denying my request?

What should I do in a scenario where I was hired (12+ years) with far less salary than(~20% less) than other members (4+ experience) in team and asked to take 80% of team's responsibilities. The hiring manager low balled me sensing that I am in dire need of that job and now I am stuck for 2 years now. The company is a big shot but I am literally getting paid less than what I used to make 10 years ago. Should I try to move within or look outside?

Hi all, I have about 7 years of professional experience but only one year as a Customer Success Manager. I work on mid market accounts currently. I love my job, but would prefer to support a more robust platform that will allow me to add more value for my customers.

I’d appreciate your thoughts on what compensation you might expect for a CSM transitioning to a new company with one year of experience.

To clarify, I don’t have an offer yet, I’m just looking to make a move.

Thank you!

A question from a youngster. Is working at a big big company with slightly low pay better or working at a much smaller company with higher pay better?

In the future, after a few years, let’s say I’m at a small company and want to switch to big big company, will the “small names” hurt my chance to get into the big doors?

I mean big big company is like 10x bigger than the small one if this was a factor. Assume everything else the same, WLB, commute, teams, etc.
