A question from a youngster. Is working at a big big company with slightly low pay better or working at a much smaller company with higher pay better?

In the future, after a few years, let’s say I’m at a small company and want to switch to big big company, will the “small names” hurt my chance to get into the big doors?

I mean big big company is like 10x bigger than the small one if this was a factor. Assume everything else the same, WLB, commute, teams, etc.

I have worked at both large (amazon, Directv, etc) and start up. I prefer start up by far. Pay is better, benefits are better, culture tends to be better, your skills triple in a shorter time, teaches you to be flexible as well. I like my won’t return to a big name anytime soon.

like

Oh wow, this sounds really good. I’m tempting to make the switch to small companies now 😄 I’m at a large company. All things are good and a (false) sense of security. I said false because I know I can be replace at any moment. I will seriously consider the options and make a move.
Thank you all for sharing!

in my experience working at smaller companies is a great place to learn a variety of skills and have the space to grow into roles that fit you well. Bigger companies can be complicated and have processes bogged down with beaurocracy etc. I would jump at the higher paying small company depending on what it was. I says this never having worked at a big company as an emplyee but as a contractor

like

You are right. The politics part of big companies is my fear. I’m kinda introvert and not interested in anything other than getting the job done and have some meaningful connections/coworkers relationships if possible.

like

If smaller company has a good reputation and is well known it could help get into the bigger company. If the smaller company is paying more and you like it that’s not a bad thing. Bigger companies generally have silos but you can “rise” higher since there are more jobs. But there is the chance of bigger companies trimming the fat because there are too many people at a certain level and there are redundancies. Smaller companies can have log jams but can also be more flexible and will generally have less layoffs unless business is really bad.

Sometimes maybe yes, sometimes maybe no...

There is a lot of personal development and growth opportunities at smaller companies. It HIGHLY depends on the leadership if it will be worth it in the long run in terms of pay and opportunity.

Larger companies have more growth opportunities in terms of available positions, but you can easily be just a number depending on the culture.

Speaking from a little experience. I started at a small company that three years later got bought out by a big company. It's been great for me once we were bought out because I got the opportunity to step into diverse projects.

Pros and cons to both, but in the end I'd prioritize a good work culture over a pay difference.

I personally think and have found to be true that you can move up the ranks in title and salary faster at a small company. The key is knowing when you’ve hit the ceiling for that small company and it then becomes more advantageous to switch jobs to another company of any size. I find that title and responsibilities means more than the company you did it at.

Hi Fishes,

Need some suggestions from everyone. I have 4.5 years experience and I was working as contractor in ZS and my CTC in parent company was 7 Lakhs.

ZS were willing to offer me FTE as ZS but at a compensation of meagre 8.5 Lakhs. I tried negotiating but they sticked with this.

How come ZS do that? Why can't they pay more as they generally pay 15+ for 4.5 years experience.

Does anyone have suggestions for what a salary should be for a Digital Marketing Analyst | Paid Social & Performance Media? I have 1 year of experience, the job asks for 0-1 year of experience. I feel I over meet the qualifications in some areas and just meet them in others. The recruiter said 50k is the salary the company is offer. I know I can negotiate. What are your thoughts on what the salary should be?

My dilemma is:
A) going back to Italy at a lower salary with less growth opps but better personal life or
B) Switching my job here and hold on

What would you do?

Thx! :)

Titles are different which is why the pay is much different. I know some may think it is a no brainer but offer A allows me to grow the department ground up whereas offer B id be apart of to just different
