What’s the weirdest or most unexpected job an accountant can do? I’m not talking controller at a cool brand or FP&A at Spotify. I mean actually different. I’ve been doing audit and reporting for years, and I’m craving something that shakes me out of the mold. Give me the strange, the fun, the I didn’t know that was a job. I need some wild inspiration before I talk myself into another round of busy season.

Product design and development. People need accounting products - accountants and average people. Then there is accounting thats in the back end of average products that the user doesn’t directly interact with. Go out and find interesting solutions to problems. I was educated in accounting, spent the first part of my career in tax compliance (public accounting and then in house). Now I’m self employed, 30-40% of my time is working as an SME for companies that are building new interesting products - I work directly with their engineers, product and project managers, customer service teams, marketing teams writing content and more. One of my newest clients is building products for AI agent shopping and payment intermediation. I’m their tax SME. And I charge $600 an hour for my work.

I was working as an auditor at EY for the first 2 years and transitioned into Project Finance at a very large Renewable Energy Company for 2 years. After 2 years of that I wanted a transition out of Finance/Accounting and joined a Development Team at the same company building Natural Gas plants for AI Data Center partnerships supporting grid reliability. Making more money than ever and happy to be out of accounting.

1st year EY 53K+2000 bonus
2nd year EY 62.5K + 3500 bonus
3rd Year Project Finance 120k + 6500 bonus
4 th year Project Finance 127k + 15000 bonus
5 th Natural Gas Developer 140k + 20-25k bonus

This new role really woke me up and has helped me articulate myself differently and get excited about work and other more commercial opportunities that may come my way in the future. Accounting/ Finance was becoming so miserable and new opportunities can help you see what else is out there if you have some grit.

Someone at my old job went sales FP&A >> sales. Also know someone who went accounting >> supply chain FP&A >> supply chain. Moving to your business partners org seems doable if you're interested.

But the TCS offer is less. So I'm not planning to join. Will the company block me if I do not join.

I’m not naive or fresh out of law school, but I’m at a point where I’m saying to myself “Why can’t I have it all?” I’ve been offered a job for more pay and less hours and I keep thinking to myself, what’s the catch? I know people will say no promotion potential or that’s not how it works…but what if it could? What if you make yourself valuable by still setting your boundaries? Why would we resent someone who has that opportunity?

UPDATE (RE: SoCal Assistant Controller Interview)

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

They said due to month-end and quarter-end close they were busy and couldn’t get back to me as quickly for a “good update”.

The recruiter said the CFO enjoyed our call, she, the CFO, will call me next week directly to “discuss some final things”.

Not sure if Im hired or not, but are there any questions about the job, comp (cont.)
