If I were working with Derek Chauvin when that happened, I would have been very surprised. I would not have known how to react because it is not something that I am used to. I have tried putting myself in that situation and I just can't.
Ya, this. You like to think you'd make the right call...but I bet a lot of cops who have stood by thought they would make a good call in that situation too.
I've already had to deal with others' misconduct and did my part to make sure they answered for what they did. I would have stopped him. Also, that kind of use of force (on the neck) is against policy for most modern departments.
You are an honor to your department and our community as a whole. This is exactly how you should behave. Sadly, many people believe that police cover up wrongdoing by others... and this is the opposite of what I have seen. I'm grateful to hear that there are still good examples out there.
This is the kind of thing that haunts me. Because honestly? I don't know. I'd like to think I would have stepped in, but there have been other situations where I kept my mouth shut and hoped things didn't take a turn because you know what happens when we call each other out. The whole culture has to change.
I like to think that I would have stopped him. Resisting arrest is one thing, but it isn't a capitol offense.
