What’s your biggest red flag in a job interview? Mine’s when they start throwing around phrases like “We’re like a startup” or “Everyone wears a lot of hats.” It’s usually code for doing three jobs with one paycheck and no boundaries. These days, I pay close attention to how they describe the “culture.” It tells you more than the job description ever will.

Those + "we're like a family." Almost always means you can expect to be fully taken advantage of and asked to sacrifice tons of personal time in the name of being a team player. Run, don't walk.

Exactly! The “we’re like a family” line always sounds nice… until you realize they mean you’ll be working nights and weekends for free 😬

I was just starting out and saw a job posting for a financial analyst at a WM shop. I asked if the job was commission based and was told it was salaried. I had an interview in the morning after working the night shift at a job. I fell asleep shortly after the interviewer started talking about the funnel analogy. The interviewer woke me up and I told if he couldn't keep my attention there was no way this could work. Then I left, found a proper finance job and never looked back.

That’s hilarious but also kind of perfect. Sometimes your gut (or exhaustion!) tells you everything you need to know. Glad it led you to something better!

Any job that wants a “self-starter” I’ve discovered is glorified sales.

Haha yes! “Self-starter” usually means “we’ll give you zero training and a demanding deadline.

I’m currently in a lease admin type role, in commercial real estate. I make a base salary of $50.5K with about $9k in bonuses. I’ve continuously received 7-10% raises over the last 3 years. I anticipate getting a promotion this year and would like to get closer to $60k for my base salary. I’m the only person in my role at the company and have been a key person in developing our team as we look to expand. Is this unreasonable? Is there a normal increase given with promotions? Thanks in advance!

Should I decline the offer and ask to be considered for a higher role that better fits my qualifications? The offer I had was with a great bank but I'm overqualified for that. Its been hard to find a job because I dont have prior experiences.

I accepted a FADP offer but I have lifelong crippling anxiety It leads to (TMI) diarrhea, I can’t sleep at night, among a lot of other issues. I see a therapist and have their support in school accom. I appear high functioning and ever since uni went remote my life and performance has only improved. I know I’m capable of getting the work done and they must see potential if they hired me. But I feel that if I ask for WFH or other accom. I’m gonna be shooting myself and my career in the foot.
