I'd do my due diligence and research industry averages prior to this conversation. If theirs is in-line with that, I'd leave it alone, but if it's not, I'm adequately prepared to help them understand that their budget may need refining as it's significantly below industry standards.
How do you deliver the message to help them understand - the balance between providing the feedback but respectful?
My method has changed over the years but now I acknowledge the limits, and then ask if there's flexibility in other areas. So I'll ask about a signing bonus, equity, PTO, or title. I also sometimes say, “I understand, that said, is there room to revisit this later based on performance or milestones?”
Thank you, are you able to negotiate increases of the non-salary benefits to compensate for the salary limitations? Also, if we start my tenure at the salary budget cap, what would it mean eventually increases for merit or cost of living? Is there a documented bonus plan in place? - then whatever they answer, have them document it in the offer letter.
