Kind of depends on the place. Most people will just have their phone out for a quick check and back it goes. Then there are the people who abuse it, and then the next thing you know, it’s a strict no cell phones in sight policy.
I'm okay with it as long as it's quick and the guests don't see it. That's always struck me as unprofessional.
I think as long as it’s a quick glance away from customers, I think it’s fine. The problem is if staff start looking and a customer sees -> then they complain it’s professional… that’s no good…
At our work, we have a “servers station” that is for us staff to go for drinks, sauces, knives and forks etc, we can also use that area to check phones, chat if it’s quiet etc. and it’s away from the customers.
I think it’s important to be able to use your phones as some may be carers, waiting for test results, have a family member in hospital etc
