It's very company / team / codebase dependant. Really it's however long the QA team feels they need to assess the stability of what's about to go out.

In my case it's ~2 working days before release. For context, we're working on a monolith, and there are 6 team members working on this codebase.

2 weeks prior to the major release

like

We typically do 1 week QA and 1 week UAT

like

Old company was 1 day, which was monolith team of 6

New company is CICD

But it depends on the company the team and the software... If you're finding bugs, or see and increase in regressions, then you need reaccess the process... Well if the company cares about quality they should reaccess the process

I'm curious about your experience with CICD. Has it obviated the need for manual QA verification entirely? Is it the QA team that's responsible for writing the tests? Do you have full integration test coverage, unit test coverage.. both? Do you find that your velocity has really gone up per sprint?

As mentioned earlier, really depends on code , architecture , automation etc. we modernized a monolith project - one year long - and had a one week code freeze prior to release .

What do you think about switching tech stacks vs becoming an expert in one stack? I am a backend Java engineer, and have solely used Java since I've started my software engineering career about 2 years ago. I don't know whether I should explore other tech stacks while I'm young, or instead focus on becoming a Java expert, given that I enjoy working in Java.

Should I specialize in Blockchain or AI? I’m a freshman in a CS degree and I can’t decide. Regarding AI, I find this field fascinating but I feel like it requires a lot of experience, degrees and diplomas.

How do you all deal with the guilt of leaving a comany/ team? I have been working at Microsoft for 1 year now, and seriously considering moving. I find the code base to be very legacy and I mostly work on obscure bugs that I spend so much time on, mostly due to navigating this large code base and not having much docs to refer to. Hence I find the job slightly unsatisfying, and that I could learn more elsewhere. However, I love the wlb, the team and company culture. The guilt stops my applying.
