I normally do not put in on my profile itself because I agree it looks desperate. I do have open to work available for recruiters, though
Spaghetti Westerns !
The Good.
The Bad..
And The Ugly…
If the scammers are really bothering you, you could always mute it. I keep it up just in case the right person sees it, and just ignore the spam.
I don’t think it’s desperate, we just live in a time where scammers are getting out of hand and they are being desperate, preying on people during vulnerable times
The situation with scammers is so depressing. They have become so common and they are getting more convincing by the day. I'd personally leave the banner up though.
I read and watch a lot of the recruiter posts on LinkedIn. A lot of the legit ones have said not to use the #opentowork, because it makes recruiters wonder why no one’s hiring you. I removed it from mine and was offered a job I interviewed for a few weeks earlier. I saw that the recruiter had viewed my profile
I used to have open to work on my profile but now, I have it hidden so that true recruiters will seek me out and my current boss won't know that I am looking.
Question. How is your resume and LinkedIn information matching up?
Use Copilot AI. Any suspicious job postings or offers that are sent to you, you can copy paste them into copilot and ask questions, like; "what do you think about this job posting, does it look legitimate"? you'll likely be pleasantly surprised at how AI can help you assess scams..
Or you can just go to the company's web site to see if they are still recruiting for the job. AI won't tell you that.
I might consider the size and strength of your network. If you've recently been laid off and you have many 1st degree connections in your industry or that you think have influence or good connects, themselves, it could be advantageous. If, on the other hand, you're not confident in your network or the likelihood that someone you know can help you land your next role, you may want to remove the banner and stick with just the setting to let recruiters know.
If you do keep the banner on, you should also have a plan to post regularly. Show your value. Work the algorithms.
Good luck!!
I have been out 2 almost 3 months. I have "open to work" on my profile, open to everyone. Why? I don't want to restrict myself to just recruiters. Everyone who I care about already knows my back story, so nothing to hide.
Are you also looking in other job boards? Indeed is the one I have had the most success with. The algorithm seems to be the most logical in suggesting roles that are appropriate for what I am looking for.
The time I got the most scammers was when I posted to my network the types of jobs I was looking for. 3 fake accounts contacted me immediately, all promoting the same CV editor. I reported all of them. That said, nothing much happened when using #opentowork so it is likely harmless and just a sign to your network that you'd appreciate their help.
Dont stop applying and ask for referrals!
I'd enable that ONLY for recruiters.
I have applied to dozens of companies and no good results. I was offered a few jobs but the companies are totally bogus. They will hire you but it is up to your moral standards if you wish to proceed and turn the blind eye.
Network, apply, use other platforms,. You don't need to advertise. Good luck!
In 2024 I got a job BECAUSE I marked myself that way. The parasites are a natural condition of the platform, just block them and move on.
If you’re already getting scam outreach, it’s not doing you any real benefit being public. I would switch it to visible for recruiters only so you still get exposure to hiring teams without broadcasting your situation to everyone. You can always manually reach out to your network and post regular updates about what you’re looking for instead of relying on the badge.
Remove the green banner instead of getting passed by. It will also keep the scammers out of your hair too.
There will be far and few between actual contacts with the "open to work" sign on your LI profile. IF you feel this is a legitimate person, go to their LI profile, see how long the profile has been around, vs. their apparent age and title. If it was created within the past three years and they claim to be a senior recruiter or director of HR... something lofty.. do a google reverse image check, look them up on Google.
For example, some of my contacts:
Super model
German Chancelor
Dr. of Plastic Surgery
B - level actress
A LOT of people from India or SE Asia - Going from India or Dallas to NY to LA to Germany..
Looking at their job history themselves, taking that few moments will save you a lot of time.
I will then report their profile and block their account.
Legitimate, though no Gov't ID used to authenticate

To give an example, I have blocked 105 people and I have no idea how many I have reported, which profiles were removed!
