Lots of the “PR” you see is a result of pay to play stuff that is ethically dubious at best.
It’s cheaper
Perhaps the only case where people won’t buy your product if they don’t like your ad.
They don’t. We all advertise.
Clarification: the advertising industry definition of “advertising” which is an ad placement in a media buy, vs. the industry definition of “PR” which is word of mouth and a good reputation from winning awards and doing good work for other clients. Do agencies run ads for themselves anymore? It’s almost like ad agencies don’t believe in their own product anymore.

They advertise, it’s just b2b.
The ad I posted was from a time where digital ads were not a thing, so if course it’s a print ad. You alluded to ads being plentiful today. I asked to see them. That banner ad was given as proof: it’s a direct marketing ad, not a campaign (like you said), which gets to the heart of what I’m talking about.
Advertising agencies have abandoned advertising — the literal marketing methodology that they sell. This means they don’t believe in their own product.
I bet if an agency had guts and consistently went all-out for years in all the pubs (and beyond, don’t we also sell digital targeting to digitally follow where clients look?), and they produced quality advertising campaigns for their own agency, they’d see results. Or are they admitting that advertisements don’t work?
PR gives something talk value (or word of mouth as someone said below). If i see an article that sounds cool, makes me laugh/smile, or genuinely intrigues me, im way more likely to send that to a friend in a text than i am to send a cool ad that did any of the same things i saw on the street. PR lets you tell a whole narrative, vs advertising is purely a snapshot of an idea and just about planting a brand in people's minds for a moment.
Much smaller client base/audience. You won’t see display ads or OOH but there is plenty of account based and industry level targeting.
I’d love to see what they look like. Because right now the ads must suck. The industry is rapidly contracting and more and more clients are not hiring agencies and doing things in-house. Maybe agencies should let creatives make these ads, instead of account people.
Otherwise they get WRAITH. #b2b
