One problem I've had is with English learners because those words mean something different in English than in math. One way that has helped is introducing Dr. XY. You put the D over the X and the R over the Y. It's all alphabetical. D, X, I (input) are all before R, Y, O (output). I'd avoid DIX ROY but it does help some.
I think it’s the intimidating of using math language such as domain and range, and practicing number sense and focusing on math fundamental skills, Helping them by getting them used to use math language may help.
