I’m teaching summer school at a high school, and the co-principals have asked me to focus on only 2 to 3 chapters worth (what they are calling “2-3 standards” in the eight days of summer semesters. However, they are also asking me to give kids the midterm and/or final at the end of each period, which covers 4-5 chapters each semester. My question is this: “Is it legal by California Ed code for the administration to ask me to teach less than each entire semester, yet test each whole semester?”

I’m guessing these are kids who have already taken algebra and have failed it?

I would say teach them the stuff that’s more advanced and then test for everything.

There’s no way in the world you could actually cover each section of each chapter in eight days.

It’s Integrated Math 1, but yes, they’ve already taken the course. All are remediating.

like

In that case I’m guessing they want you to focus on the basics, and push them to learn enough well that they’ll pass the tests, instead of trying to cover everything on a surface level. Makes sense if it’s their second time around and there’s limited time. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thoughts on Engage NY/Eureka math...

I finally was able to convince my principal that we need a consistent math intervention at the MS level (grades 5-8). (Right now, we are just "doing our own thing," which isn't helping students progress much.) Does anyone have any suggestions? It would be beneficial to have some sort of progress monitoring tool as part of the program, if possible. Our classes run roughly 55 minutes (which is too long for an intervention, in my humble opinion).

Thanks for any advice.
