Never go full funnel

Getting major funnel envy from these responses

Chances are you might be surrounded by folks new to agency world with no prior experience in marketing.

I’ve never worked in house, and I’ve heard about funnels at agencies all the time. Maybe if you never did any BTL work, I can see that happening.
Social, video and display can be upper funnel because they can create high reach and brand building too. Using the funnel is best to align creative and media to the purchase journey. So upper funnel has messaging designed to create awareness and to hit an awareness KPI to a lot of people. Whereas consideration usually gives more motivating info like RTBs that reinforce and convince people to consider the brand. And the lower funnel gives you a CTA of some sort to get people to act like buy now or click for more information
Everyone ejaculates in the funnel. You want to be up-funnel-stream.
Nothing worse than being a downstream funnel guzzler
Zero chance you worked at droga or anywhere and haven’t talked funnels. Also funnels are dead, but they are still talked about.
@AM1 with you there, love me a funnel cake
No, advertising is all funnel stages. I don’t know why you wouldn’t have heard of it tbh - very surprised you haven’t. I think it became ubiquitous as companies all tried to “go digital” and adapt playbooks that worked for DTC ecomm to their own businesses, even if that sort of playbook made no sense.
Generally speaking upper funnel = awareness, mid funnel = consideration, lower funnel = conversion. Differences can be as simple as different messaging points or as significant as custom creative for each stage.
I highly suggest watching Tow Girls, One Funnel, a little known ad documentary on the origin of the funnel and its darker side.
Tie it to a benefit ladder and it makes conversations a lot easier.
A mix between the rise of new media and business models have evolved the funnel tiers (or meaning of the tiers), and some brands have their own tailored one to meet their portfolio.
Advertising shouldn’t just be top of funnel. It’s why you have agencies at each tier but some of the larger agencies can pull off full funnel quite effectively or lead it across other agencies. We often see the wonderful adverts, a stunt or activation but not the stuff that nudges sales beyond this - that is why some agencies are far more successful than others because they own the full journey to bring meaningful impact.
You’ll notice that case studies and awards papers are a lot more guarded than they were in early 90’s 00’s… I think this is because smaller agencies were cottoning on.

I also quite like Dave Trotts Art of Persuasion talk. He has a really great and simple showcase of the funnel. Well worth a watch.
my eyes saw funeral and I’m like what haha

Are we having funnel yet?

Funnel is just a fancy term for customer journey. Usually used by planners who aren’t good at strategy.
