Everyone is currently struggling.
But to be frank, DEI barely helped POCs or people with disabilities like myself in advertising.
It did help Caucasian women though because mostly white agencies were able to fill their DEI quota by hiring more white people.
It’s why agencies went on 5 year tear bringing white women onto leadership teams and rarely EVER a man or woman of color. In fact it became a major point of contention for many in the POC community. And rightfully so.
I say this as a white person.
@AD2 we’re already there and as usual, the GOP cowers in the corner.
Everything with this abomination of an administration is done through threats or extortion. I finally truly understand how fascist Germany happened
I don’t think so. I believe everyone is struggling to find full-time work right now.
I don’t think it helped much in the first place, because it was always less about actually changing attitudes and more about appearing to do so in order to avoid bad press and social media outrage.
Like the DEI approach most agencies and companies put in place was more about pushing mandatory classes and educational videos that talk to you like you’re a kindergartner than actually making meaningful hires and giving room for exceptional people to really show their stuff.
The problem is something that requires a real commitment from the c-suite on down, and with few exceptions it was never there to begin with, no matter what the press releases all said.

I’ll be honest. I don’t think so. I mostly agree with ACD1. I think some of the DEI stuff was helpful for people trying to break in. Some of those entry-level type programs are still happening too.
But for those of us already in it, it’s always the same problem where you have mediocrity in high positions who, out of insecurity, pull the ladder once they climb it and seem to only hire people that remind them of themselves or people they find attractive. But there’s sometimes a CCO or ECD who isn’t like that which can open doors.
In a way, it’s like getting good work made. You have a lot of things that can mess it up. A recruiter who doesn’t know what a good portfolio is. An ECD who thinks SNL is still funny and doesn’t get the humor in your portfolio piece that actually resonated with its intended audience. A CCO who just hires the creatives he CD’d at the agency he used to be an ECD at because the people at the current agency miss the old CCO. Etc etc, but you can eventually breakthrough.
I doubt it, my agency has doubled down on it, already had a ton of dei
Honestly I don't think that will be the direct effect. There are still a lot of forces keeping us out of job opportunities. And there are thousands of organizations that don’t abide by what's happening, especially when it concerns women. I usually look at the company team before submitting a job application, and that lets me know who they really want in their environment. The real downside of this anti-DEI stuff is that every time a woman or minority person messes something up, that will be why. And it will be an easy excuse to get rid of anyone they want.
I’m sure there will be some companies who take the window longer have to worry about DEI or diversity to heart and avoid hiring certain people. My concern is not so much of these companies will want to hire less minorities more that since this anti-DEI thing has become so popular that women and minorities who have been hired even for roles, they qualified for get shame as being DEI hires, even when they’re not so that might discourage people from hiring minorities in the future, but that is just my own personal fear right now
No.
I agree a lot of people are struggling to find work. However, I do think ageism is a factor. I’m also looking for either freelance or staff as a BA.
I have friends who have been unemployed for over a year. Just my pov but with the actions of the current administration it will get worse.
