Do it in person. Go in their office towards the end of the day on a Thursday or Friday and just rip off the bandaid. It gives both of you the weekend to process and you can come in the following week and begin enjoying the transition
Give more than two weeks notice and offer to assist with all transitional matters. They’ll appreciate the extra time (if you can of course)
The Godfather: “It’s not personal. It’s business.” Repeat this to yourself.
Will be saying this on repeat tomorrow.
Also let them know what you plan to do to help ease the transition. A matters list, transition plan, etc. Knowing someone is still “checked in” as they make the transition really helps it go more smoothly.
I also gave my closest supervisors handwritten thank you notes on my last day. They were still hurt but I’ve been able to repair with one of them.
