Painters tape worked well for me, and the sofa pads with coconut bottom to keep from scratching the floor. They’re like $10 on Amazon
We just sketched the floorplan in excel/PowerPoint, printed out multiple copies, and then drew on them sizing the furniture to scale of course.
SketchUp used to work really well for this, but there's a bit of a learning curve TBH and the paper floorplans were just much easier and more intuitive
I’ve heard of people using Houzz (I don’t think it’s free though), but if you’re able I would highly recommend asking an architect to help you! There are so many things that I didn’t even think of when I was remodeling that my architect was able to add perspective on (outlet placement, trusses, etc) that I think it’s worth the money if you are doing a major renovation.
Appreciate the advice. Not really planning a Reno - just want a way to play with furniture arrangement and the like
Congrats!!!

Took some doing to get used to their site but I used https://floorplancreator.net. Super helpful when it came to laying out our living room as that’s 22x12 in itself, and figuring out our daughters’ 16x12 room with awkward radiator placement.
I used the free version RoomSketcher for some basic plans and furniture. You can customise the size of furniture to exactly what you have in mind so it works if you want to see what fits
