Unlikely. Run the numbers through an AI platform. My hubs and I ran the numbers on a few things...coffee truck, etc, and turns out lots of things aren't worth it to start up. 🤣
In Vancouver there’s one and it is amazing!! But It’s super pricey they also offer classes to bring money in. As well as if you use certain machines (cnc) you have to pay per minute of usage. I personally think it’s a rip off. BUT it’s been up for a long time. There are also others in BC that I’ve found and none of them have gone broke as far as I know- but don’t know as a business owner how much you would bring in. Some of the spaces apply for grants to also bring money in. Where are you based out of?
Are there any spaces similar to this already available? You would have to do a market research and add the overhead costs and based on that see what your membership would be even if it is just to break even! I love the idea. I actually wanted to open one myself. But where I’m located the cost would be too high of a membership and people wouldn’t pay for it 🙃- but it is my dream to manage one of them with the potential of owning it 🥹
As a creative myself, there is a strong need for this - especially if the locale/city has an active network of craftspeople. Though there are challenges with making it sustainable for sure. Worth exploring more revenue streams beyond membership like 1) Event space (curated events - not any and all) 2) Co-working space for select industries (not any and all). Would be interested to dig through numbers and Find a way to make this sustainable. All the best!
My local maker space with a large downtown warehouse building and many specialized tools (3d printers, laser cutters, leather sewing machines, etc.) went out of business a few years ago. They couldn't keep membership at a high enough level.
The local paint pottery however has been open for a longer time. Small studio in a retail shopping center. High sitting fee and high price per piece. Not sure how much longer they can last with the higher costs.
It sounds like a labor of love with a similar business model of a gym. Large equipment costs, attendance ebbs and flows, balance of space and costs, etc.
That's a awesome idea I would definitely buy into but that because I'm a artist and that what I do . I don't know how well it would do maybe in a big city it would take off good but a small town would have a chance
