I would take the FT role to avoid a break in the resume.
Yes.
Why don’t you consider starting your own law firm—a professional service limited liability company (PLLC)—and get contract work that way? The only real downside is you’d have to get health insurance on the exchange, but that’s what I do. None of the companies where I’m GC have an insurance option (my doing) and you could be a 1099 independent contractor. The upside are the tax deductions you could claim, and you’d likely be doing the same work.
Ha! I was at my vacation house and got an email asking when I was going to be back into the office in NYC. My answer was “I don’t know” on a call with the managing partner. But, man, when I finally came back to clear out my office, I was a dead man walking. No one would look at me directly. There is more to it, but I still get laughs out of the story when I tell it to friends.
I think if it’s just a 3 month gig and you’ve been looking since Feb, that’s a pretty risky move. Depends on your appetite for risk.
But the they are choosing between a long term paycheck and a 2 month paycheck….
That’s a tough one. How long have you been looking? The market is weak and may get weaker so I personally would be nervous about turning down a decent FT offer….
Been searching on and off since February, but really ramped up my search over the last few weeks. I’m also likewise concerned about not being able to get anything else :/
I’ve had great experiences in contract roles for Fortune 50 companies and other recognizable brands. These roles have helped my resume, and I’m always asked about them or told it’s why I got the interview/job. I highly recommend a contract role you like over a FT job you don’t. Take the contract and keep
looking for FT work, unless you like the freedom of remaining a contractor.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Do you obtain these roles through staffing agencies or directly with the companies? Could I DM you to ask about this further?
You say the FT offer is undesirable, but you also say you can't stay where you are. It sounds like taking the temp role and seeing what else might be available is almost the same as taking the FT role that you will hate (and is going to end up being short term, eventually, anyway).
Since you already have too much job hopping on the resume, taking the temp role allows you to say "I intended that one to be short term" to a future potential employer.
I agree with your points. My main concerns are that I may not find a new role in time before the temp role period expires (it would only be for max. 3 months), and taking on such a position might lead to unfavorable conclusions about me (i.e, I was probably fired from my last job and took on this role because I couldn’t land a FT position). If I took on the FT role, at least I would not be under a deadline to continue my search (though due to the work conditions, it will be much more difficult to job search), and I would probably burn some bridges if I left within a year… I guess saying “I intended this position to be temporary” works if I can find something within the time period (or if the gap is short enough I can omit it from my resume altogether), but the unknown is what makes it hard to decide which would be the better choice here :(
Yes - play your options! You have some!

Why is the FT not desirable? Salary, commute, or something else ?
