WWYD? Have had a couple interesting - and flattering opportunities - come my way recently and in active convos with both:

1. Set up a new regional practice within an established industry vertical in a T2 strat firm

2. Set up a new global mgmt consulting practice within a F500 tech company, 2 hops from CEO

Background: Y3 Strategy Partner at a mid-sized firm. Seller-doer mindset and enjoy building solutions and teams. Optimizing for: intellectual stimulus, empowerment/agency, op model, comp.

Business perspective - Make sure to kick tires on how much runway and investment they're willing to put behind each of these and come to some conclusion on how successful you + venture can be in each role.

Personal - what's the level of effort, risk and payoff?

Cool! Good luck however it goes.

I feel that internal consulting sounds better than it is. I haven’t yet seen a version where it isn’t viewed as a cost center and ultimately disbanded. I think they generally have lots of potential if leveraged properly, though, and with the right sponsorship.

Item 1 may be great if you have budget to hire, travel, and invest in projects, plus have a promised (say) three years to make something happen. Without those guarantees, it’s hard to be successful. Also, Given the risk you need good cash flow plus a small pot of gold if you show success.

I think #2 sounds fun, especially if you have any interest in getting out of consulting in the long-term. However if you are consulting for life, #1 is better.

I had, in the past, aspired to join MBB or T2 because of the client access, quality, cachet and comp. It was always the distant objective. But have recently become jaded by them, although some lingering appeal is still there. Feels like I’d be more intellectually stimulated on client problems here and this option would be the most similar to what I’m currently doing.

For the F500, the potential to take a global role is hugely exciting. But concerns that with AI, now might not the be best time to create a consulting practice from scratch? Although, if you were to do it, having the support of an established publicly traded company might be the way to do so. It’d be a ground-up build, including in management consulting services I’ve previously not had a lot of exposure to and I’d basically be building a consulting biz.

Need some parameters of how to think about this as it’s not apples to apples.

#2 is a more entrepreneurial. More risky as they might decide to get out of consulting altogether. If you ever want to stop consulting, exposure of working in tech will be your way out.
