Yes, but we don't get paid for that time!
I don’t work at all over the summer. I take the 10 weeks off completely and am fully recharged come August
Me too!
I’m at the point where I just say “I love my summers - we’re hiring so if you’re really that jealous I’ll send you an application!”
That usually shuts people up!
This is a good response. People are so ignorant. I usually only take a few weeks off and then start working on stuff for school.
I always try to explain that being a teacher really means that you have next to no free time, even in the summers. We're constantly grading, developing lesson plans, and attending meetings to make sure that we are the best versions of ourselves for out students. While it's nice to maybe have some more flexibility with my schedule in the summer, it's still spend trying to get a head start on the next school year so I won't be drowning in as much work later on.
I don’t bother to explain anymore. Unless you are a teacher, you just don’t get it. And it is not worth the arguments. I just smile and nod and say “yes. It is nice to enjoy the summertime.” And the conversation usually shifts to another topic.
This, so much this. I gave up a while ago, too. Every family gathering, I always had to deal with the same remarks from ignorant people with no knowledge of what it's like to actually work in education. Somehow, they all know how to do my job better than I do and know everything about the education system. Okay, buddy... I just let them yap and roll my eyes internally.
I just nod and smile..
Also gotta get in the CTE hours. There really is no down time
And we can't forget the workshops, professional development, lesson planning , just to name a few. I am thankful for the time we are out of school, but I tend to spend a lot of time working on school stuff during the summer
Don’t forget professional development
Is this training mandatory? I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t completely unplug. I don’t even check emails.
Yes- getting all of the professional development points (PDP’s) we need here in the right areas of competency in order to renew our licenses here in MA every 5 years means coursework in the summers. It is much too hard to take classes, teach full time and raise a family and manage a household otherwise.
Say it louder for the ones in the back. I have so much trouble explaining this to people and lets not even start talking about the fact that we are wayyyyy underpaid.
