I’ve had that talk several times. Yes, you are expected to constantly ask for more. I began keeping an archive of all my requests.
A salary cut is unusual. Usually they will just push you out of the firm (and before that, you will usually get talked to for having low hours). You need to constantly ask for work, unfortunately. I did that and it insulated me when there wasn’t enough work to go around. The partners said in my review that my hours were low but it wasn’t my fault since I was “good about asking for work”. Still got a bonus that year despite being 200 hours below pace!

If you are not getting work, there is a reason. However, thay are going to tell you it's your fault for not doing enough when it comes to your review, so act accordingly.

Just want to clarify that the reason isn't necessarily your fault and asking for work probably won't fix it.
They always scolded me and didn’t give me much of a bonus when that happened but never came close to firing me. I was still making them money, just not as much as they arbitrarily wanted me to.
Definitely expected to ask for more.
I have been disciplined for not meeting hours. 1/3 salary cut for 3 months for billing almost 100 below goal (was billing under 50 for a goal of just under 150).
We had a baby my first month at the firm, and I took about 6 weeks of bare-minimum work while staying home and being with my family. Honestly better than unpaid leave, but also kinda wished my employer just let me take the time and come back and get back to it. 🤷🏻♂️
Thank you for sharing! So they cut your salary after 1 month of low hours? I guess that’s better than being fired.
