Young solo here w/ a question about fees: 1. A local solo criminal defense attorney has offered to pay me to go and make appearances before the Court on some of her cases to make announcements. (For example, “ready when reached”). I’m open to doing this and this attorney is asking what my fee would be? Does anyone have thoughts or opinions on what a reasonable fee would be to do something like this? Hourly? Flat Fee? 2. I want to ensure this is ethical. I don’t see an issue with this. Thoughts?

I've heard of people doing this for an appearance fee of $250. I'm sure you could do a little more or less, but that's kind of the ballpark if you want to charge a flat fee.

like

In NYC per diems (on the civil side) charge a few hundred flat fee and try to pick up lots of appearances per day. I’d recommend talking with the attorney and explaining your thoughts. From what I’ve heard that sort of work is all about the relationships and can actually be very lucrative.

See if you can get added to the LPL insurance and speak with your carrier too. I represent law firms as outside General Counsel, feel free to DM me if you want to chat ethics and law firm risk management.

Pretty common. Look up appearance attorneys in or around your area and see what they charge. There are several here in CA.

Totally unrelated, but “young solo” really should have been the title for the “Solo” Star Wars movie. Has a much better ring to it.

Very clever! Haha. This never crossed my mind.

Hi! It depends on your location and agreement. I think P2's suggestion is great.

I answered every question even interview ended on a very good note andI was confident that I will definitely make it to the next round then after an hour later I got the rejection email.

I still am in shock what could have gone wrong. Seriously what could have gone wrong.

I’ve been at my clerkship for 5 years (4 with a different judge) and one with my current judge, and I heard horrible things about him before starting, but I assumed they were exaggerated. Turns out they’re all true, and I’ve had to start therapy to deal with him and the incredibly toxic environment. I’m trying to get out ASAP b/c he also has a history of firing clerks without cause or notice, but I think I’ll only be able to give two weeks notice if i get the job I’m interviewing for. Thoughts?

Does anybody have a resource available for pricing and billing? I am 2 years out of law school, working as a corporate attorney, and wanting to go solo. Ideally, I will take my corporate client with me, but am working to build work on the side during the transition. Also, do you have any recommendations for document preparation? I would like to draft wills, trusts, and other estate planning documents, but would like a resource that has boilerplate provisions to utilize as a reference.

I'm entering my final year of law school but am going part time since I work full time as a paralegal. I have been a paralegal for more 10+ years and I want to open my own firm after I pass the bar.

I've worked at a lot of different size firms including a startup with a few attorneys and I was able to help with a lot of the ground work with getting the practice management system in place and still do some of that now at my current firm. Has anyone done this right out of law school? Any advice?
