Recruiting Bonus: What's a reasonable bonus for a paralegal who recruits another paralegal to join the firm?

3 attorney firm. I’ve been here for 6 years and have used Westlaw exclusively. Now we are switching to Lexis because apparently Westlaw is too expensive. I hate change. I know where everything is on Westlaw and now I need to relearn. Apparently Westlaw will not budge on price and would rather just see a client leave than work with them. Super annoying. How do you handle billing disputes? Already feel like we’re a steal compared to other firms, but it’s the pits when clients kvetch about the bill after working hard on their matters. For five figure disputes, anyone recommend collections? Don’t really want to institute retainers, especially since it doesn’t seem common for our practice area.

Don’t want to leave my boss in the lurch with some big cases going to trial at end of year but also can’t use those as excuses to stay. Would like to offer a reasonable proposal. Even if boss turns it down, I’ll feel better about knowing I offered to help.

Anyone have any tips or ideas on how to collect money owed from a client? In a few months it’ll be two years since the debt was incurred. We send monthly reminders of the bill. It’s a significant amount (well to us) and the client is now starting to open up and telling everyone about the situation that we helped to resolve.

Can a New York registered attorney (solo practitioner) file a diversity jurisdiction lawsuit in a federal court of another state other than NY, (while residing outside the US, and not running an office in NY)? Any thoughts on this? Thank you!

Has anyone received equity as contingency comp? I have a potential client with a founders dispute. He doesn’t have cash, and the other founder ripped him off and is now running the company. He wants to sue for equity and wants to pay me with whatever equity he wins. I’ve never done a deal like that. Is that even enforceable? CA law. The startup is actually quite promising.
