1. Chief of staff can mean very different things depending on the company. Some roles are strategic, others are glorified secretarial work. The former have good career trajectory (to director of strategy type roles), the latter do not. Pay is also highly variable because of this reason. WLB is likely to be relatively poor because you’re technically the CEO’s right hand person. Impact can be huge though.
PM’s impact is smaller since you’re more focused on owning a single product or even a portion of a single product, but pay is high (in big tech), WLB is decent, growth potential is good.
2. The transition from consulting to Chief of Staff is easier than consulting to PM, but both can be done
3. I would not stay anywhere I am unhappy
Thank you all for your comments! This has been super helpful in making my decision!
On your point about staying till EM, doesn’t matter for tech firms. I am a ~2Y too and recently got designated. Have been looking in tech for the last month and it has been really hard. Tech goes exclusively by relevant YOE so if you have that you should be good. Doesn’t make sense to stay till EM
Yeah if you want to get into PM but don’t have strong relevant experience, it makes sense to make the switch earlier in your career. Hiring bar gets higher as you become more senior and aim for higher titled exit.

Good point - I would not hire someone without direct PM experience as a Sr. PM. Anyone without direct PM experience should come in as PM 1
If you’re coming fro Mck they’re going to assume you have real skills and executive presence. I would go for cos at a company that’s raised ~$100m or product at a company that’s raised ~$10m.
