Always ask for 1400, almost always get 1250.
Make them feel like I’m coming down and negotiating 😉
Freelance 1: that seems like a very fair rate. Always shoot for what you’d be happiest with, and then set a floor for yourself. If $1100 is what you value you as your floor then don’t go below it. Especially if you consistently find work. On top of that, i typically have have a range of what Ill do, based on a few things: A. Is the project an book opp or does it suck? The better the project, the lower I’ll go. B. Is it a pitch? I shoot for a higher rate. Long hours/zero chance I make real work. C. Is this a place I’d like to work again or full time in the future?
I’d love to bill $1400 every day, but the agencies that can usually pay that, aren’t the agencies I really want to wake up for in the morning. Even though it’s freelance, it’s still really important to find good projects, otherwise you’ll burn out.
Christ, what creative position? Is freelance all its really cracked up to be? I really want to do this some day
OP: Senior level freelance CW here... what rate do you think I should be asking for? I've thrown out $1350 before but most I've gotten is $1100. Is that typical? I have a senior AD friend who claims to get $1300-1500 rates so not sure what I'm doing differently. And if you guys are ACD-level and getting $1250...
Totally hear ya on finding projects you're still excited about. Just out of curiosity if you're open to sharing... Which agencies ARE the ones willing to shell out $1400?
Maybe I've been barking up the wrong trees but anytime I throw out $1300+ they come back with $800 😂
Generally your bigger holding company agencies have bigger pieces of business, so they have more money to work with.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but this app sort of works without context. It’s anonymous for good reasons and bad. With that said, I have no idea what your book is like, which might account for lower rates? It’s the reality of what you can demand in freelance. I’ve got a pretty great book that I’ve been putting together for close to a decade and when it comes time to asking for my day rate, it’s does the heavy lifting.
Do you normally have to fill out a W2 if you’re with agencies? I usually do as a freelancer and the taxes killlllllll me.
Killing it. What’s your day rate?
Noice!
@Grey 1 acd level. Partner and I have been together 9 years. The works great if you’ve got the drive to find jobs constantly
I know a CD team getting $2K a day. Each.
OP: Fair enough. Books and work are definitely subjective. I've worked at well-known agencies and have good work (at least what people tell me) but I also don't have 10 years of experience yet (more like 6-7 here) so maybe I just need to reevaluate my expectations. Anyway thanks for humoring my questions!
You should set up a business with you accountant, especially with the new tax plan. You’ll only be paying 20% taxes.
How many hours do you usually work?
