I think this is actually an opportunity to mention to your partner that:
1. You went into consulting for a variety of experiences and to look for an industry you would resonate with you in the long run
2. You've been thinking about traveling less, personal reasons for a lifestyle change, etc
3. This client seems like a good place to invest your time in and you can envision helping them with your other skills in the long run
Generally I think consulting firms are pretty supportive of people transitioning to industry teams and your partner may actually be able to put in a good word for you
Is the partner reasonable? If so, talk to your partner. Tell them you’re interested in the role and explain why. If it’s because you’re not getting something out of your current role, it gives the partner chance to mitigate. If it’s because the new role is amazing, a good partner would recognize this as an opportunity for you and support your application. If they’re best buds with the hiring manager, that could make you a shoe in!
Odds are you can’t. You can only mitigate - what’s the partner's likely reaction?
Thanks both for responses. Unfortunately someone from my team has just left, and I am a critical part of the team. If I leave, it will leave a huge gap in capability. Usually, I would be able to chat to them directly, but it’s a bit of a sensitive time! So I’m not sure whether I should just apply for the role, and then speak to the hiring manager and ask for confidentiality for the being? Although I’m not sure how tight his lips will be..
IMO, part of having a mature conversation with partner is saying “I’d like the role, I understand it’s a sensitive time but if I’m offered the position I’d request that we have a properly managed handover.” If I was hiring manager and you asked me to keep it quiet knowing that I’m good friends with the partner, I’d count that against you as it puts me in a difficult position. Just my opinion.
You’re putting the hiring manager in a bind because they wouldn’t want to steal someone and threaten their current relationship. Situation honestly sounds pretty unlikely
