Rising Star
The client is an actual person, and not a corporation. Seems obvious, but it is something that people can have difficulty with. Get ready for that first client that says “what do I pay you for” or files a grievance in relation to something ridiculous.
You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how few clients you get that are in it for the money - these are real people with real lives, and they are almost all in real pain that is really effecting their ability to work and enjoy life.
And you’ll be surprised to find that often it feels like you’re letting those people down - even on cases where I’ve gotten my best results, the clients would rather have never had this happen to them, and the sums they receive are usually nowhere near enough to make them whole after liens and case costs.
But in spite of that, your clients will remember and appreciate your efforts if you are patient, understanding, and most of all FAIR with them. Don’t be that attorney who collects a full fee in those all-too-frequent situations where the injured client puts next to nothing in their pocket.
What type of plaintiff’s work? It seems most defense attorneys are surprised about the work that still goes into the case after you get the check.
Also those stories plaintiff’s attorneys told you about difficult or crazy clients? They weren’t lying ha!
No autopsy = no case more often than you think. It can’t be about the medicine if you go to trial. Sounds crazy, but it’s you’re relying on the medicine and no systemic breakdown, you’ll lose. 85% of medial cases end in defense verdict
Don’t burn bridges on the defense. You’ll likely go back. I’ve seen very few people with your seniority make it as plaintiffs. After 14 years on the defense, you probably don’t respect the work. You’ve likely been indoctrinated and are making the move for the money.
Idk. At our volume pi firm a 20 year defense lawyer came over and made insane money in just his first year. Pushing cases. Working them up and just being easy to work with and logical. Could go the other way too.
Not billing by the hour is great but you’re going to be spending more time on each case
