@CD1 It looks like I can no longer DM since my latest full-time employer doesn't exist anymore. Otherwise I'd love to.
Me, left the madness two years ago, guess who m too old to hang with all the cool advertising people
The writing is on the wall. Pivot now to upskilling and exploring other industries like project management, finance, education, industrial, early stage startups, business strategy. A lot of our skill sets are highly valued in those lanes and can be fine tuned to execute other types of projects. I’ve been in the game for the same time and have gotten tired of the feast or famine cycle. Laid off a handful of times and it’s not getting any easier. Last layoff was 1.5 yrs ago and I was out of work for 14 months trying to survive off freelance and side gigs. I started to position myself as a marketing strategist and got a role at a small food startup incubator to help launch new businesses… they had over 267 apps for that one gig. Unfortunately today, especially with the rolling up for holding co’s lots of layoffs in adland and even tech. I’ve been eye my exit from the industry into venture capital and private equity as well as consulting with early stage startups. Feel like the hustle to stay afloat and competitive is another marathon race we’re in where AI is eating ad budgets and margins. They say the new thing is a “portfolio career” where new grads and being instructed to add “entrepreneur” to their title or resume. At the end of the day you have to build a business to escape the next layoff. Reminds me of “Everyday I’m Hustlin’” - Rick Ross.
I was a Senior Copywriter for years. I'm still with the same company, but now I'm in Creative Direction managing a team of writers.
I still struggle with letting go of the "copywriter" identity and still kinda fumble when people ask me what I do.
Writing for advertising is just tough. EVERYONE is using AI, it's changing the game DRAMATICALLY, especially at the junior level.
All that to say, AI will probably come for my job eventually and we'll be in the same boat.
You’ve made the right decision. Delete LinkedIn now. Save yourself from the humble brags of people who refuse to believe this goose is well and truly cooked.
Yep, LinkedIn is acting like they're at the feast when in reality they're scrounging for crumbs.
I think many will go through this soon too. Words of wisdom are welcome on how to cope
I say 10 years in advertising on all my applications because 14 years sounds too senior to be unemployed and seeking mid-level strategy roles. But I completely get you, feeling a lot like this lately. Only revived my portfolio and website subscription for a role I was interested till they ghosted me. I’m now trying to pivot to something else, really unsure of it it.
