Experienced hires: would anyone be willing to have a quick chat sometime next week about how you made the transition? Advice on the application process is great, and I’m also interested in hearing about your goals and experience now that you’ve joined. Just looking for an honest conversation! 1) I haven’t been too impressed with the short and long term visions folks in tech set unless they came from consulting backgrounds, so I want that mentorship towards manager in a McKinsey like environment before I commit to an industry / function for the long haul
2) 10 years from now I feel like I’ll regret not having worked for a bit at a firm like Mck since I do plan on more personal ventures / governmental posts abroad long term. I think the exposure, network and long term impact outweighs short term thinking. Kind of like the pros of a top mba
I think you have your answer
OP I was at McK and just moved to Amazon as a PMT ( had the same offer as you at BSchool). McK has given me a couple of major things -1) incredibly strong and responsive corporate network BUT non existent product manager network 2) great cross functional communication and professional energy BUT terrible health / personal life because of the wlb 3) great benefits and long term pay BUT less short term pay. In hindsight , while I am sure McKinsey will accelerate my career long term, I don’t think it adds value when it come to short to mid term tech careers specifically.
Totally with you on the product path. I think only tech experience will give you that, and I do think product roles are more entrepreneurial in training than consulting roles. A combination of the both is perfect for this world though.
What's your motivation for joining McK? Do you think you'll learn things that would help you when you make that move back to product?
I've always been an advocate for passion > money (if your personal situation permits). If this is something you've always wanted to do, and you think there is a viable pathway for you that would help your career progress, I don't see any reason why you can't make that boomerang work.
First of all, they won’t let you start till next year, most likely you will have to start rather soon
Fall is around the corner i feel next year is a stretch
AWS. There is a reason most consultants want to exit to tech.
