Apply and brush up on knowledge about the program before interviewing. I personally am confident in my ability to quickly pick up new programs without needing assistance.
Figma is super easy to pick up if you are already fluent in illustrator, my agency has moved to using it for a lot of digital layout even when its not a product or ui design project - we use it for social and even storyboarding for animations. Picking up visual prompting for gen-ai also just takes a little bit of effort, but there are tons of guides online that will help you with a basic formula to start experimenting.

Depends on what it is or what the role is. Just keeping up with the Adobe CS updates is enough work. I’m not a UX person, and while I’ve done digital campaigns, I’m not a web specialist. I’m a pretty good generalist because I’ve had to work on a lot of 360 and each arm of the campaign is usually developed in the later stage by people who specialize in those things and I oversee it but I’m not in the weeds.
However the requirements I see sometimes are absurd. They want a person to do the work of a team. That’s just stupid. Having said, while I’m not adept at every AI tool out there, I’ve worked with a few and I know the basics. They’re not super complicated and much faster to pick up than say, learning to be a Photoshop expert from scratch. I know very basic film editing in premiere, but I would not feel comfortable saying I’m proficient at it. I don’t know fiigma or canva, but chances are that if you want me to be good at those, then the job itself is probably not a good fit for me. ‘Cause even if I was proficient at them, I’d be miserable doing that.
Get to know Figma and Midjourney. There are videos on YT you can watch to get a working knowledge
I do. Takes months, years to be adept though. I’ve seen job posts expecting creative directors to be fluent in 4-5 AI programs!
Go learn Figma and Midjourney. They are so easy compared to the Adobe suite. And of course you’re expected to know them. This is the job and you have to “keep your tools sharp.” That means you’re up-to-date on the newest technology, tools, apps, and you always stay on top of what’s next. Nobody wants an art director that doesn’t stay current.
True. And that’s the rub, ADs constantly having to be current in terms of programs/tools, to be or do it all. So what’s the equivalent of expectations for copywriters keeping up, to be current?
Honestly figma is very easy to pick up just basic use, and midjourney is a little rough going into it but if you brush up on photography terms and also use other ai's to prompt for you thats easy to pick up too.
I think it'd be pretty dumb to lie if asked in an interview about a skill you don't have. I would say apply though.
True. But the list is ridiculous. Figma is heavy for UX, apps, web. There are nuances, and I can’t know every program in a proficient way.
