Congrats! Yes - one last vacation for a while, and then the grind begins. I am excited but also nervous. Other associates seem cool, at least.
Love this!
Just finished my first year in a firm and I never worked as a summer associate. Here are my tips/message to anyone who didn’t work as a summer associate at their firm and is feeling nervous:
1. Understand the nerves are normal, you wouldn’t be there if you didn’t earn it!
2. Be very exacting about what the assigning partner needs from you. Take extra time to look for any mistakes. Early assignments are usually barometers of what they can trust you to do.
3. Always think about next steps for a client.
4. MAJOR TIP: Block off time in your calendar to do work so that Partners cannot send you more work when you’re already up to your neck in assignments and deadlines are fast approaching.
5. Meet with people outside your practice group to grow your internal practice.
6. Document all the great work early on so you’ll have it ready for Associate review time.
7. Maintain your outside-legal-interests.
8. Find internal mentors who actually want to help you.
9. Drink water, stretch, and look away from the screen at least every 10 minutes.
Thanks for sharing this, some key nuggets in there for sure
Not fresh out of school by any means, but I still get nervous whenever I'm starting a new job, so try not to sweat it. And remember to ask lots of questions. Better to be proactive and avoid mistakes than have to deal with the consequences after the fact. GL everyone!
