I own a 1973 Chevy nova and and a 1988 Dodge ramcharger. Eventually I want to put a 6.6L duramax in the nova, and make it into a sleeper/fun weekend car, restomod the interior for comfort, convenience and tech etc. Then I want to put a Cummins in the Ramcharger and make it into kind of an overland/back country truck that I can still take down the road to get to the back country. I’m at a midsize firm in the Midwest and I’ve noticed that we’ve hired multiple associates who all graduated law school the same year. Some are coming from clerkships, other firms, etc., but they’re all on the same graduation year. This feels like it’s setting up a squeeze down the road for these folks with respect to partnership. Is there something I’m missing or is this something that will cause issues down the road?

If you could work at any agency, where would you go?

Y’all. NO ONE KNOWS HOW MANY PEOPLE, AND WHO, WILL BE LAID OFF. The economy may bounce back next month or next year. It may get much worse or maybe we just sit stagnant before things improve. Firms may lay off a lot or maybe just super low performers. No one knows. Stop reading tea leaves and just work hard and try to save a bit more than usual. There’s nothing else you can do.

I’m a first year associate and perpetually concerned I’m going to get fired bc I feel like my work product isn’t at the level it should be. Does anyone have an idea of how easy/ hard it is to get fired?

I’ve been having a bit of trouble working with one partner at a new firm. There are definitely things I can/need to work on for improvement, but I’ve been practicing for four years and have had no trouble with other partners/peers before. This partner sent an email to me with bills for one client of his/hers I worked on and now looped in a practice management person to have a ‘management call’ (prob to talk about billing less..) I don't understand why people call themselves "rising x year at ABC". For us who are plain "X year associates", are we doomed to fall?

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.

“Keep costs down”???? I am happy to keep costs down by not working on this ducking matter anymore. Maybe stop saying yes to matters that are too small to justify our rates and staffing an expensive senior person on them when you’re already dying trying to get anything staffed. You didn’t have to do shit on this matter, didn’t hear you complaining about my taking the lead and managing everything for you when that was happening. >.>
