Being a leader is different for every person because of who you are leading. The best strategies i've found are to get hands on training with the people I'm leading, and get to know them on an individualistic level. Learning how they learn will help you grow as leader, and it will help you to know what to look for. One of the best quotes I heard when I was learning was "it's one thing to want to be a leader, and it's another to want be followed"
You have a few options:
- You can pay for the additional training/courses that are out there.
Will you learn a lot? Yes. Will it be tailored to and uniquely applicable to you? Unlikely.
- Leverage a mentor. An ideal mentor is someone that has walked the path that you are on and is able to give you pointers to help make your journey less painful and/or risky. Can you learn a lot from your mentor? Absolutely. Will what they share be uniquely applicable to you and your situation? Probably.
- You can hire a professional development coach. Not all coaches are skilled to handle everything, so be specific in your search. For leadership development you want someone that has corporate leadership experience, so they can relate to the role. You want also want someone that has coaching and leadership development training and experience. Coaching is a skill and science that has to be learned and practiced over time.
The best coaches give you the value of the years THEY spent at school, taking courses, hundreds of hours of personal and professional development etc. in an hour session. The help you craft tailored solutions based on your situation, skills, and strengths.
Fair warning a lot of what I call “IG coaches” are at best, coaches that are still very green and under developed in their craft. I’ve seen and heard horror stories. At worst, they are propóleos that got in to coaching for a quick buck.
As much people like to downplay coaching, if you look at the studies conducted by everyone from Pew to HBR - coaching works. Pick any business leader or professional you admire, I bet you my bottom dollar they have a coach. The trick is finding the right one.
I’m a coach and consultant and I have a two coaches and two mentors. These are people I consider part of my support council and they have been instrumental to my growth as a professional.
I’ll end with this you have tons of options when it comes to your personal and professional development journey, for any of it to be worth it, you need to to the work of defining and looking for what it is you need and reject/walk away from anything that doesn’t meet those needs. 🙌🏾
Ask a strong leader to mentor you.
