34 and noticing that all my friends are friends of convenience - ppl from work, friends of friends, or ppl I’ve met randomly. How do I cultivate more deliberate friendships based on shared interests?

Have you ever been or currently in a relationship with someone of who’s political beliefs conflict with your own?

Not dealing with this currently have dealt with it in the past. My parents started out opposites but now believe similarly. I’m wondering if it is possible in this day and age.

What to do when parents dig their toes into your relationship? They don't approve of who I'm with and very vocal about it.

In 10 years, this may be in the rear view or they may not let up. Anyone with experience in this?

My SO adds very little to our relationship. She has a dead end job. I cook. I work. I oversee finances. I plan trips. She doesn’t have a voice in the relationship. I’ve asked her to give her perspective but she always defaults to mine bc she thinks I’m smarter/worldly. She feels intimated by me and my social circle. Lately, I’ve found myself thinking for her. Anticipating her wants and needs and then adjusting my behavior to meet them. Which she appreciates but it’s frustrating 29M 27F

Does anyone feel a disconnect with friends who work a typical 9-5, or those who are non-entrepreneurial and/or never owned/run a business?

One of my best friends growing up just passed away. We lost contact with each other a year or two after graduating high school and I recently came to learn he was was battling cancer the past 5 years and ultimately succumbed to the illness. He hid it well from everyone and led a very private life during it all. To make matters worse, he had just turned 25. Seeing pictures of the condition he was in towards the end of his fight broke my heart. I wish I had known so I could’ve been there for him.

Would anyone consider their senior colleagues to be their genuine friends?

I’m going to be a dad! But I have some questions. When should I tell my manager/teams? I’m up for senior promotion this year, will this impact that promotion? For those of you that work in public what tips do you have for managing your work and family responsibilities? For context, my wife, once she’s done with maternity leave, will only work 25-30 hours a week. I know working in public and having a new born is probably going to be a lot to juggle, but I have to make it work.

I have realized I grew up in a household where my dad did not treat my mom as an equal. He belittles her, is rude and convinced his way is the only way.

Having a moment and wanted to make a post. I lost a special family member suddenly in April 2020. And then another July 2020. And then the most influential person in my life in February 2021. And then another big loss in April 2022. I’m still grieving. Every single day. Some days are better than others. I’ve had heightened anxiety and depression with it. My heart hurts all of the time. I miss them all so much. Some days just seem to be better than others.

Any book recommendations for grieving the death of an estranged parent?

I grew up in a nuclear family away from extended relatives who were never really close. Parents were either emotionally unavailable or distant. All I've wanted for myself was a big loving family to call my own.. my parents are unaccepting of my sexuality & my partners family is also quite fucked up so she's isn't super close to them either. Honestly this sucks & it feels like I'll never have a huge supportive family I've wanted & craved for.

When the IRS (e.g., a RO/AO/Examiner) calls or writes a letter… How do you verify that it’s really the IRS and not a scam? I’m new to tax law and I’m worried that I’m going to respond to/answer a scam and give away client info (or my own tax preparer info). What is a simple way to explain to my boyfriend that investing in equity with an expected return of 10% is better than paying off debt that is growing at a rate of 6%. He has student loans and is adamant that he wants to pay all of them off immediately before saving any retirement money.
