Anybody use a personal computer for work? How's your experience been, any horror stories/watch-outs?

What company in their right mind would allow that?

like

Even if your company is ok with you using a personal computer but won’t provide one, buy one that you use ONLY for work. All the earlier posts about confidential information on a personal machine are valid. Beyond that, even if the company is fine with you using your own computer, keep in mind that the company might want to inspect your machine someday. And they would probably have a right to do that.

I WFH on my own computer. Only horror story is my IT guy remoted in to fix a cloud issue and deleted my years of history (that I frequently use to search for stuff 😭).

That's a good idea!

I use my own PC for WFH. It’s been great because our firm’s network had been migrated to the cloud, so when I log in from home, it’s the same as if I was in the office. On my own PC, I don’t have to install anything, just need the URL to log in.

We can only log on to the company servers from our work laptops. Even the company laptops have like 2 different security levels (one laptop and two to connect to the VPN) Can't access email/any of the many servers without them. Now that I'm writing this i realize this is probably way too much security but again it's a huge company so i can understand

Eeeek, no thanks.

Not that I mess with my personal laptop that much anymore, but if you are at all being responsible you need to say goodbye to downloading that cool plugin or videogame off the internet.

Plus I would not feel comfortable job hunting.

Plus being able to physically shut down work laptop and phone during the weekend has been a blessing both before and during wfh.

All fair points

Had a prior job that we had desktops only so if we needed to WFH for any reason (repair person coming, snow day, etc) we had to use personal computer and VPN, no problems there. My sister also has had to use a previous org’s laptop for current company work and vice versa and never had any problems, that was mostly high level data analysis as a biostatistician for two diff hospital systems so I’d say it’s possible even with secure data

So I just came out at my small firm in a small southern town. Historically, I haven’t discussed my personal life at work— but I had to give notice anyway. I told the partners I’m moving to be with my boyfriend. It was a surprisingly lovely conversation given that I’m at a firm of rich old men, deep in the heart of Tr*mp country.

At what degree of distraction do you stop billing? I ask because it’s impossible to work at a peak level for an entire day. So how do you think about times when you are working but being **slow**? How does this translate into time lost in a typical day working? I know this is a function of how busy you are and the kind of work on your plate—but what is usual and unusual?

Not sure where this post belongs because I don’t think it’s an excel solution, but I want to be able to pull data from various direct datafeeds (and be able to pull in reports from say excel as well).

Once I get all the data in the same place I want to make sure all the data looks the same before I begin manipulating it (consolidating/mapping fields essentially)

What’s the right software to do this? Is it as simple as having direct feeds integrated with Access or is it something else entirely?

Out of curiosity, what percent of your work/analyses are Excel based? And what other softwares do you use the most (Tableau, PowerBI, Alteryx, etc.)

Public schools use Google for everything. So they use Microsoft Office as little as possible. Even Office 365 isn’t used much. I teach an exploratory class to 8th graders for Google docs and sheets since the school tech doesn’t support the educational MS Office 365. I like the MS Office desktop version because it does so much more than 365. I relate how Google does things similar to MS Office but not to the level that Office does.
Do businesses use Google docs, sheets, & the rest for anything?
